Kandy SC 21 points
Police SC 7 points
Kandy Sports Club, the defending champions, made a step closer in safe keeping the League title when they outplayed Police SC by 21 points (2 tries, 2 conversions, 1 penalty try) to 7 points (1 try, 1 conversion) win at the Police Park in their Nippon Paint Inter Club rugby encounter yesterday.
At the short breather, the winners led 14 to nothing.
Though Kandy won this game they were not close to being a champion outfit. They did mistakes in tandem and ball handling was pathetic. Diluksha Dange, Damith Dissnayake and Tharindu Chaturanga were outstanding both in attack as well in defence.
Kandy scored their tries through burly Heshan Kalhara and nippy Srinarth Sooriyabandara with Tharinda Ratwatte converting both. In the later half, they received a penalty try while Police SC scored their only try through Vageesha Weerasinghe which was goaled by Manilka Ruberu.
Referee was Hasantha Weranga.
Kandy lead the Cup points table with 45 points followed by Havies at 40. Meanwhile Kandy will need to travel two more times to Colombo to play Ch and FC and Havies and they must win both in order to safe keep the title at Nittawela for yet another season.
