Army SC player held in heavy rain and semi darkness by a Kandy SC player

Kandy Sports Club survived yet another Colombo appearance this time against Sri Lanka Army SC to register a close 21 (3 tries, 3 conversions) to 17 (2 tries, 2 conversions, 1 penalty) after heavy rain forced play to end in the game early in the second half at Havelock Park last weekend.

The ground marking lines were erased off by heavy rain plus the chances of lightning was on the cards which as a major threat for the players resulted in the match being called off and awarding the win to Kandy.

Army led the match 17/14 at the short breather.

Army drew first blood early in the game through their full back Sudaraka Dikkumbura who scored a brilliant try which was converted by fly half Tharindu Hettiarachchi to take a 7/0 lead, Kandy did not waste much time as their dashing winger, Diluksha Dange was in lightning speed to touch down Kandy SC’s first try which was scored by his school mate Tharinda Ratwatte to equalise the score at 7 each.

Then in the 25th minute of play, Army SC took the lead through Centre Danushka Thalwatte’s try which was converted by Tharindu Hettiarachchi. This took the Solders further ahead through another penalty to take the lead to 10 points at 17/7 favouring the Army SC. On stroke of half time Jason Dissnayake try and Tharinda Ratwatte conversion narrowed the Army lead to 3 points at 17/14.

But Kandy SC hit back early in the 5th minute of the later half through a dandy try by their skipper and fly half Nigel Ratwatte which was converted by Tharinda Ratwatte to take the lead at 21/17.

At this stage heavy rain made an appearance at the Park Club for the match to be called off.
