Karateka Randev Athukorala felicitated by Sports Minister

Two-time medal-winner of the South Asian Karate Championship who is ranked 11th by the World Karate Federation in the heavyweight Kumiate category, Randev Athukorala, was felicitated by Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera, Secretary to the Ministry of Sports Dr. D.M.R.B Dissanayake and President of the Karate Do Federation Sisira Kumara at the sports ministry premises.

Young Athukorala, hailing from St. Peter’s College, won the silver medal in the final bout of the Heavyweight Kumitae category at the South Asian Championships with an Indian karateka claiming the number 1 position, whilst last year he won a gold medal at the championship staged in New Delhi. He has been a silver medallist at the coveted Asian Silent Knight Karate Tournament in Malaysia, Nepal Karate Championship in Kathmandu and the Iranian World Karate Championship in Tehran.

He is trained by Sri Lanka national karate coach Sensei Kalyana and Sensei Jurangpathy whilst his formative training was gained under Sensei D.M. Nimal. Randev’s next challenge will be the Commonwealth Karate Tournament.
