Former Isipathana and national player Kavindu de Costa will lead the Red Shirts for the 2020/2021 rugby season where many of their senior players have opted for other clubs.

Costa represented Isipathana in 2012, and played club rugby for Havies as well early in his career. He has been at Longdon Place for the last 5 years, during difficult times. His two brothers Lasintha (2012) and Ashan (2015) too both led the Red Shirts in rugby football. Kavindu made his debut for the junior national team in 2012 at the Asia Rugby Under 19 event which took place in Colombo. A year later he was selected for the senior national team in 2013 at the Serendib Cup, and later at the Asian Five Nations event in Philippines.

Speaking to Daily FT, CR & FC President and former Royal 1982 skipper and national player Ted Muttiah said “We are pleased to confirm the appointment of Kavindu de Costa as a captain for the season 2020/2021. Kavindu has been with the club for 5 plus years, as a utility back, he has played as a scrum-half, winger and full back. Kavindu brings experience, maturity and demonstrates the values and ethics that the club espouses. CR is in rebuilding phase of its rugby talent and we are confident in Kavindu’s leadership to nurture the young squad.”

Meanwhile Red Shirts already lost out on Dinuk Amarasinghe, Kevin Dixon, Janidu Dilshan and are likely to lose out Omalka Gunaratne as well to other Colombo clubs.
