Inter University Invitational Carrom Championship 2019
The universities of Kelaniya and Moratuwa were crowned Men’s and Women’s champions respectively at the recently held Inter University Invitational 6th ‘Grip to Grip’ annual carrom tournament, while the University of Moratuwa’s Theepika Shanthakumar came away with two personal accolades.
Organised by the Kelaniya University Physical Education Division, the tournament saw Shanthakumar and Pramedha Mendis of the University of Kelaniya, both of whom had been displaying excellent skill throughout the tournament, adjudged the best Women’s and Men’s players respectively.
Shanthakumar also won the Best Novice Player award – introduced for the first time this year – alongside the University of Moratuwa’s Keminda Sanka. Shanthakumar’s double was the main highlight of the tournament alongside Manuka Ashen’s ‘white slam’.

The tournament was held over two days at the Dharmashoka Hall of the Kelaniya University recently with over 250 players representing several universities from across the island.
At the awarding ceremony, medals and certificates were awarded to the winners of the tournament under the patronage of Senior Professor of the University of Kelaniya S.R.D. Kalinga Mudali, Acting Physical Education Director of Kelaniya University G.G.U. Saman Kumara, Senior Professor H.R.S. Sulochani, President of Carrom Federation of Sri Lanka Parakrama Basnayake the, Instructors of Kelaniya University Physical Education Division, and Sports Club Office bearers, while a large number of players students also participated in the ceremony.
