Sri Lanka U19 opener Anjala Bandara top scored in the match with 29
Sri Lanka held their nerve to clinch a two-wicket win over England Young Lions in a tight finish to the third Under-19 ODI played at the SSC grounds yesterday.
In a low scoring game England Young Lions were dismissed for 114, and Sri Lanka didn’t have it their own way losing the first three wickets for 13 runs and half the side for 46, with 29 of them coming off the bat of opener Anjala Bandara.
Century-maker of the second ODI, Pawan Pathiraja (17), and skipper Dunith Wellalage (18) carried the total to 81 before they were separated. When Sri Lanka’s eighth wicket fell at 96 in the 39th over they required 19 runs for victory with two wickets in hand. Spirited batting by Yasiru Rodrigo (12 not out) and Matheesha Pathirana (6 not out) saw them home with six overs to spare.
It was the England Young Lions’ second successive defeat in the five-match series where Sri Lanka lead 2-1. Spin continued to prove to be England’s downfall as they were bundled out for 114 after winning the toss and batting first. Sri Lanka’s varied spin attack of Wellalage and Waniju Sahan (both left-arm spin), Treveen Mathew (off-spin) and Raveen de Silva (leg-spin) together took eight of the ten wickets, after fast bowler Rodrigo had given them the initial breakthrough with two early wickets in his opening spell. None of the England batters were at home to spin, with the highest score coming from Rehan Ahmed who made 19.
The fourth match of the series takes place on 8 December at the same venue. (ST)
