Praveen Maneesha

Lumbini College’s 18-year-old right-arm leg-spinner Praveen Maneesha ran through the England Under-19 batting to record his best figures in an international taking 6 for 56 as the home side was bowled out for 247 in reply to Sri Lanka Under-19’s first innings of 324 when play resumed on the fourth and final day of the first Youth test played at Wormsley yesterday.

England had started the final day strongly placed at 193-4, trailing Sri Lanka by only 131 but collapsed to the spin of Maneesha as they lost their remaining six wickets for 52 runs. Rocky Flintoff, son of former England all-rounder Freddie Flintoff was Maneesha’s first victim when he was dismissed in the first over of the day. Wickets continued to tumble as Maneesha ran through the batting with England finding it hard to counter his leg-spin. Keshana Fonseka tried his best to stall Sri Lanka with a gritty knock of 86 off 149 balls (13 fours) before falling to Sheshan Marasinghe.

It was the 160-run partnership between Freddie McCann and Fonseka that formed the foundation of England’s first innings at the end of the third day. Opener McCann fell just short of a second century of the summer against Sri Lanka when he was stumped on 92 scored off 114 balls (15 fours).

Scores: Sri Lanka (Under-19) – 324

England (Under-19) – 247 (o/n 193-4) (Freddie McCann 92, Keshana Fonseka 86, Vihas Thewmika 2/37, Praveen Maneesha 6/56)
