The International Schools Athletic Championship 2018 was held on 23, 24, and 25 February at Diyagama Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Homagama.

The International Schools Athletic Championships (ISAC), which commenced in 2001 was the brainchild of (late) Gateway College Founder R. I. T. Alles, has now established itself as the biggest national flagship sporting event in the school calendar of The International Schools of Sri Lanka (TISSL).

This year’s ISAC has special significance for Lyceum International School, Nugegoda as this was the 9th time that they took over the organisation of such a challenging meet. Around 1500 athletes from the International Schools mentioned above, competed in 106 events for both boys and girls.

Major props must be given to the organising committee for all their hard work and contribution towards this event. Initially the event was planned to take place in Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo, but due to construction taking place at the stadium the venue was changed to Diyagama Mahinda Rajapakse stadium. Despite these hardships, the organising committee, under the guidance of TISSL and ISAC 2018 Chairperson Kumari Grero, managed to make this year’s ISAC a memorable experience for all the participants. University Grants Commission Chairman Professor Mohan De Silva graced this year’s ISAC by participating as the chief guest.

One of the changes which was done at this year’s ISAC was not choosing a champion at the end of the event; instead, medals were given for the winners of each event and there were winners from almost every school. But the most outstanding performances were recorded from Lyceum International School, Wattala. Athletes from Lyceum international School, Wattala was able to conquer 93 medals, including 39 gold medals, 33 silver medals and 21 bronze medals, and stood out at the best performers. The second best performers of the event were from Gateway College, Colombo as they were able to acquire 65 medals including 22 gold medals, 18 silver medals and 25 bronze medals. Lyceum International School, Nugegoda won 54 medals which included 19 gold medals, 17 silver medals and 18 bronze medals while Lyceum International School, Panadura was able to score 17 medals with 5 gold medals, 1 silver medals and 11 bronze medals. Athletes of Lyceum International School, Ratnapura showed their colours by claiming 14 medals altogether with 7 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 5 bronze medals.

Conducting this prestigious event on such a grand scale would have been impossible without the contribution of its valued sponsors. This year’s ISAC was sponsored by several esteemed organisations of which Pearson Edexcel under the brands Pearson, Edexcel, BTECH and PTE served as the Principal Sponsor of ISAC 2018, while Next Click Events also took Co-Sponsorship. McDonald›s Sri Lanka and Imperial College of Business Studies also joined as Special Sponsors. Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. contributed as the main Print and Web Media Sponsor and China Lanka Education as the Gold Medal Sponsor. Also a number of reputed brand names such as TISSL - The International Schools of Sri Lanka, Brandix Lanka Ltd., Lyceum Careers, Assetline, Glitz, Hatton National Bank Kohuwala, Nestle Lanka PLC and Barclays Computer Ltd served as sponsors and supported this event as well.
