Angelo Mathews celebrates taking a hat-trick for Northern Warriors, (Above) Mathews’ hat-trick victims
It seems that former Sri Lanka Captain Angelo Mathews cannot stay out of the spotlight in cricket. Initially he was overlooked for the Sri Lanka team for the Cricket World Cup and subsequently when the injuries started to pile up he was brought in as a travel reserve and eventually ended up becoming the first batsman in international cricket to be timed out.
On Tuesday, the opening day of the Abu Dhabi T10, Mathews leading Northern Warriors helped his team defend a total of 103 by picking up a last over hat-trick and thereby pulling off a nine-run win over Samp Army (94/8) captained by England all-rounder Moeen Ali.
Dismissed for a duck, Mathews made amends with the ball by having Moeen Ali, Basil Hameed and Qais Ahmed all caught off the last three deliveries of the match to end with figures of 3/19.
In another match played on the opening day, Sri Lanka all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne took 3/25 for New York Strikers (96/6) but failed to bring victory to his side as they lost to Deccan Gladiators (118/8) by 22 runs.
