Angelo Mathews will take no further part in Sri Lanka’s tour of the West Indies, Sri Lanka Cricket has announced. SLC, in a media release last evening stated Mathews was set to depart the West Indies last night to “attend to a family matter” back home.

“The purpose of his return is to attend to a family matter,” stated the release, without any further explanation.

It is unlikely Mathews will be able to return at any point in the series considering the COVID protocols and quarantine regulations concerning air travel.

Mathews, who had played in each of Sri Lanka’s four games against the West Indies – three T20Is and one ODI – and captained the side in the T20Is, has had a poor series by his standards. He has failed to fire with the bat, registering scores of 5, 13, 11, and 5, while he hasn’t bowled since the first T20I. His only highlight of the tour came in Sri Lanka’s solitary win so far – in the second T20I – where his bowling changes played a crucial role in securing victory.
