Achini Rathnasiri - Open Women’s Doubles Runner-Up, Banisha Perera - Champion Men’s Plate, Subash De Silva - Champion Over-40 Men’s Singles, Manjula Fernando - Champion Over-40 Men’s Doubles, Sachin Dias - Open Men’s Double and Mixed Doubles Champion, Thilini Hendehewa - Champion of Women’s Singles, Mixed Doubles and Women’s Doubles and Ranthushka Sasindu - Champion Under-19 Boys’ Singles
McLarens continued to dominate the world of badminton, with several of its shuttlers shining at the 65th National Badminton Championships 2017.
The national tournament, held at the Royal College Indoor Stadium from 1-5 November, was open to all age groups ranging from the Under-13 Girls’ and Boys’ categories to the Masters Division singles and doubles. Once again the outstanding shuttlers with a skilful performance managed to make their mark against the best of the best and secured their positions at the pinnacle of the sport.
The tournament had an exhilarating atmosphere with many highlights that stood out. Thilini Hendehewa claimed the triple crown, as she dominated the women’s singles, women’s doubles with her partner and the mixed doubles championship with her partner Sachin Dias. Dias along with his partner secured the Open Men’s Double Trophy while Achini Rathnasiri and her partner fought their way to becoming the Open Women’s Doubles runner-up. Subash De Silva was crowned the champion in the Over-40 Men’s Singles category, Manjula Fernando and his partner claimed the Over 40 Men’s Doubles championship and Ranthushka Sasindu emerged as the Under-19 Boys’ singles champion. Banisha Perera became the champion of the Men’s Plate category.
To add to her greatest triumphs, one of McLarens’ most talented shuttlers Hendehewa represented the nation at the Lagos International Badminton Challenge 2017 in July and was crowned champion at the Women’s Singles and Doubles events.
