Mercantile Football Association celebrate 105th anniversary in grand style

The Grand Ballroom of the Galle Face Hotel Colombo vibrated with the electrifying spirit of celebration on 6 December, as the Mercantile Football Association (MFA) marked its 105th anniversary in grand style. This momentous occasion transcended mere celebration, serving as a powerful testament to the Association’s rich history, unwavering dedication to sport, and unwavering commitment to fostering a united and thriving football community.

The MFA boasts a legacy dating back to 1918, making it one of the oldest football leagues in Sri Lanka. Its storied history is interwoven with the evolution of football in the nation, and its impact on the sport is undeniable. The anniversary celebration served as a poignant reminder of this legacy, honouring the pioneers who laid the foundation and the generations who have carried the torch forward.

Among the dignitaries gracing the event were FIFA Senior Consultant and Scotland Football Association former General Secretary Stewart Michael Regan, FIFA South Asia Lead Regional Officer Prince Rufus, FIFA South Asia Regional Technical Consultant Chokey Nima, and Sri Lanka Football Federation President Jaswar Umar.

The evening unfolded with a heartwarming ceremony that recognised the most tenured active member companies, players, and committee members. Their dedication and contributions have formed the bedrock upon which the Association has thrived for over a century. As each honouree received their well-deserved recognition, the air buzzed with appreciation and gratitude, solidifying the evening’s theme of unity and recognition.

MFA President Saif Yousuf, addressing the gathering, emphasised the importance of collaboration in elevating the standards of football in Sri Lanka. He highlighted the Association’s efforts to support players by providing employment opportunities with member companies, which has not only improved their livelihoods but also fostered a stronger environment for players to excel in their sport.

Following the ceremony, guests indulged in a delectable dinner, serenaded by the energetic performance of the renowned band, Grace. The vibrant atmosphere fostered a sense of community, allowing members, players, and stakeholders to connect, share experiences, and forge new bonds. This spirit of camaraderie is the lifeblood of the MFA, and the event served as a powerful reminder of its importance. 

A captivating raffle draw added to the excitement of the evening, culminating in the grand prize of a pair of return tickets to Malaysia. The anticipation and excitement further heightened the festive atmosphere, leaving everyone with smiles and a sense of anticipation for the next draw.
