The Mercantile Volleyball Association (MVA) recently announced the dates for the Mercantile Volleyball Championship 2024, with the inclusion of a Masters Tournament, in addition to the usual A Division, Championship and Super League tournaments.

Being the national sport, Mercantile Volleyball Championship is one of the most anticipated sporting events in Sri Lanka’s mercantile sporting calendar.

The preliminary matches are scheduled to be held in Davisamara Ground, Seeduwa, on 17 and 18 August, and the final matches will be held in September at the National Youth Services Center in Maharagama.

The tournament was introduced as a means of fostering goodwill and comradeship among the local mercantile fraternity, while at the same time popularising the national sport. Following its revival in 2012, which saw the participation of fifty teams, the Mercantile Volleyball Championship celebrates its 11th year with an anticipated total of over 100 team participations in both the men’s and women’s categories.

This year’s championship is being organised by a passionate and spirited team led by Crystal Martin Ceylon (Pvt) Ltd., Senior Manager Saman Weerasuriya and an energetic executive committee comprising of representatives from many reputed mercantile entities in Sri Lanka.  The tournament will be held under the designated national rules and regulations. Employees who have joined their respective organisations before 30 May are eligible to participate in the tournament.

The new addition to the tournament is the Masters category, designated for men over 40 years as on 1 August. Unlike other categories, two non-employees are also allowed to represent teams in the Masters category.

Through the Mercantile Volleyball Tournament, the Mercantile Volleyball Association seeks to provide a platform for budding volleyball players in the country to receive good employment opportunities and aid them in the achievement of higher levels in the national game.

The closing date for applications will be 31 July. Further details can be obtained by calling 0710 682 682 (Chandana) or 0775320050 (Prasangi) or by e-mailing [email protected].
