Ministry of Sports invests Rs. 46.2 m for Sri Lankan team at Tokyo Olympics

The Ministry of Youth and Sports is investing Rs. 46.2 million, the largest amount in history, for the Sri Lankan team of athletes who qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan and coaches.

Director General of Sports Amal Edirisuriya revealed the value of investment while at the Sports Development Department, where he was due to hand over the cash check recommended by the National Sports Council and the High Talent Committee on the instructions of the Minister of Youth and Sports Namal Rajapaksa.

Describing the cost and facilities provided to Sri Lankan athletes representing the country at Olympic Games, Edirisuriya said that the Minister Rajapaksa had taken the initiative to give them the highest value in the history of Sri Lanka.

Accordingly, the allowances and facilities provided to the athletes participating in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and their coaches are as follows:1) 

a. Granting $ 15,000 each to three athletes who directly qualified for the competition.

b. Awarding $ 10,000 each to six athletes who qualified for the competition on a different basis (bipartite/tripartite and others)

c. Providing $ 5,000 each to six coaches of qualified athletes.

2) Provide business class flight facilities for all participating athletes.

3) A daily allowance of $ 40 for all athletes and coaches for the duration of the tournament.

4) Prior to participating in the tournament, all athletes and coaches will be admitted to a bio-bubble at the Cinnamon Grand, a leading star class tourist hotel, to facilitate pre-quarantine activities.
