Moors SC, Negombo CC, SSC and BRC win on rain-free day

On a rain free day Moors SC, Negombo CC, SSC and BRC won their respective matches of the SLC Major Clubs T20 tournament played yesterday.

Moors SC had a fight on their hands to beat Badureliya SC by two wickets at Panagoda. Having restricted Badureliya SC to 91-8 off their 20 overs, Moors SC lost half the side for 58 inside the first power play and had to depend on their ninth wicket pair to get them home with 17 balls to spare. Alankara Asanka made the highest score of the match with 25 for Badureliya SC, and Moors SC’s Sri Lanka Under-19 World Cup cricketer Malsha Tharupathi was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/7.

At the NCC grounds, Negombo CC beat Ace Capitals CC by 17 runs. Madawa Warnapura, son of late Sri Lanka’s first Test Captain Bandula Warnapura top scored for Negombo CC with 52 off 37 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes). Himasha Liyanage, 45 off 35 balls (5 fours, 2 sixes) and skipper Dilshan Munaweera, 38 off 19 balls (3 fours, 3 sixes) contributed towards Negombo CC’s total of 152-9. Ace Capital CC lost five wickets for 61 inside the first power play and despite a plucky 38* off 30 balls (1 four, 2 sixes) from Raveen de Silva could manage only 135-8. Spinners Dilshan Munaweera (3/20) and Pasindu Ushettige (3/26) bowled best for Negombo CC.

SSC had the better of exchanges with Tamil Union at the NCC grounds winning a low scoring contest by five wickets. Tamil Union were shot out for 97 in 15.4 overs after deciding to bat first with off-spinner Lakshitha Manasinghe (3/24) and part-time spinners Danushka Gunathilaka (2/26) and Nipun Dananjaya (2/9) running through the batting. After being 85-2 in the 12th over Tamil Union lost their last eight wickets for a mere 12 runs in a shocking collapse. SSC spurred on by Krishan Sanjula’s knock of 43 off 31 balls (3 fours, 3 sixes) coasted home with six overs to spare. 

BRC completed a comprehensive six wickets win over Chilaw Marians CC at Panagoda with Risira Weerasuriya (48* off 40 balls, 3 fours), Dushan Hemantha (34) and Dulaj Ashen (20) helping them to their target of 130. Chilaw Marians CC batting first made 129-7 with Ayon Fernando scoring an undefeated 53 off 42 balls (3 fours, 3 sixes). – (ST)
