St Peters are one of the strong contenders for Singer League 2019

Singer League 2019 Round Two

The second round of the Singer League 2019 will kick off on 31 May when Isipathana lock horns with S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia at the Sugathadasa Stadium. The Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) got the green light from the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Defence after a long wait of over six weeks due to the terror attacks in the country.

The second round games will be worked off in Colombo while Kandy will host their only Cup match at the Pallekelle Rugby Stadium when Trinity lock horns with the Royalists at the 75th Bradby Shield encounter. The return leg will be played at the Royal Sports Complex on 15 June.

The rest of the Colombo matches will be worked off at the Sugathadasa Stadium while Bogambara Stadium will host the Plate and Bowl matches among the Kandy schools and Maliyadeva from Kurunegala.

According to the organisers, the Plate (2 p.m.) and Cup (4 p.m.) will take place on Saturdays and Sundays while the Bowl encounters, Shield and Division 2 games will be worked from Wednesdays to Fridays at the same timings. The outstation matches will very likely be worked off during the weekends at the Bogambara Stadium.

Once the league concludes, knockout rugby will commence on 6 July with the final encounter taking place on 20 July. Players will break for the Advanced Level examinations and will return for the shorter version of the game during the second week of August. The Sri Lanka national outfit is expected to field a team for the Asian Sevens Under-20 during the third weekend of August with Hong Kong very likely to host the event once again.

Youngsters from the age group of Under-12 to Under-18 are likely to have only their All-Island tournament end of the season. (SJ)
