Following the resignation of Namal Rajapaksa as the Minister of Youth and Sports it is learnt that members of the two bodies he had appointed - the National Sports Council and the Technical and Advisory Committee to Sri Lanka Cricket too have tended their resignations.

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene was appointed as head of the 15-member National Sports Council in August 2020 for two years, and a four-member Technical and Advisory Committee was appointed in February 2021 with former Sri Lanka captain Aravinda de Silva as Chairman. This Committee was reduced to three when Roshan Mahanama, who was a member, resigned in January. The other members of the Committee are Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan.

The main task of the Sports Council, comprising eminent sports personalities and officials, was to advise the Minister on matters connected to developing sports in the country.

The Technical and Advisory Committee was tasked with providing advice on the development of the sport to the Sports Minister, Ministry officials and the President of Sri Lanka Cricket.
