Namibia’s David Wiese

launches first ball of Super Over for a six against Oman

Namibia overcame a spirited Oman to pull off a thrilling 11-run win in the Super Over after both teams had tied their T20 World Cup Group B match played at Bridgetown, Barbados on Sunday.

Oman mounted a dramatic comeback with the ball after being bundled out for 109 to take the match to a Super Over, but a composed Namibia, led by David Wiese, dominated the one-over eliminator to start their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign with a win.

Wiese, who picked three wickets and then ensured Oman didn’t defend their low total, starred in the Super Over alongside his Captain Gerhard Erasmus. Namibia scored 20 and defended it to pull off a dramatic victory.

Wiese’s 9 off 8 balls took the teams to a Super Over, where he walked out to bat with Erasmus. Oman preferred to rely on their strike bowler Bilal Khan than going with Mehran who brought them to this situation in the first place. Bilal started with a wide yorker that Wiese cut behind point for four. He then tonked a full-toss for a six over long-on before Erasmus wrapped up the 21-run over with two successive fours. Wiese wasn’t done for the day yet as he came back to defend those runs successfully, even dismissing Naseem Khushi. His mix of yorkers and change of pace blunted Oman, as they could only score 10 runs.

This was the third time a men’s T20 World Cup game went to the Super Over and the first since 2012 and Wiese became just the fourth player in men’s T20Is to bat and bowl in a Super Over.

Earlier Ruben Trumpelmann and Wiese took seven wickets between them to bowl Oman out for 109. Namibia in their reply managed 109-6 despite having four wickets in hand, which forced the game to go into a Super Over.
