Sri Lankan Sevens rugby outfit left the Island early today (21 September) for the Asian Games 2023 which will take place in China from 24 to 26 of this month.

The Sevens outfit under Tharinda Ratwatte will play alongside Taipei and South Korea during the group stages. Former Royal skipper, CR and FC, Kandy SC and national player Dushantha Lewke will be the Head Coach of the outfit taking over from Nilfer Ibrahim for the shorter version of the game.

Speaking to Daily FT, Sri Lanka national skipper Tharinda Ratwatte said, “We been together for about one month. Many of the senior players are not available for this tour. It gives a good opportunity for the juniors to win their national Jersey and perform to their best of their ability.

Meanwhile Head Coach Lewke said: “Most of all I am happy that players got an opportunity to play, especially young boys who will be good for Sri Lanka in the future. I’m just happy to be a small part of their journey.  Most of the youngsters will be making their debut at national level, as nine of the last Commonwealth Sevens players were not available for this tour.” Sri Lankan outfit will play under OCA (Olympic Committee of Asia) flag.
