The National and Junior National Aquatic Championship 2018, organised by the Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union, will be worked off from 1-4 November at the Sugathadasa swimming pool.
This event will attract nearly 3,000 swimmers competing across four days in 22 different events. The tournament will comprise two segments – the junior and senior categories. In the junior nationals, newcomers Lyceum, Wattala will defend their title while Royal College, who took the boys championship last year, will defend their crown.
Last year’s winners in the senior women’s segment, Mahamaya Girls’ College, Kandy, will compete to retain their silverware. Having won the All-Island Schools Swimming Championship for the 20th successive occasion, Mahamaya’s girls will be firm favourites. Visakha Vidyalaya will look to give the Kandy girls a good run for their money. Visakha last won in 2016. Another Youth Olympic star who featured in Argentina recently, St. Peter’s College’s Akalanka Peiris, will be in action at this mega event. (SJ)
