Sri Lanka players, some of them arriving yesterday and coming straight from the second Test against South Africa, took the limelight on the opening day of the Lanka T10 Super League played at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium yesterday.
Sri Lanka’s former white-ball Captain and skipper of the Hambantota Bangla Tigers Dasun Shanaka got the tournament off to a flying start with a blazing knock of 51 off 17 balls inclusive of 4 fours and 5 sixes, but his team could rack up only 106-8, the last five overs producing just 33 runs. Jaffna Titans off-spinner Traveen Mathew was the key figure, capturing four wickets, a performance that fetched him the Player of the Match award.
Jaffna Titans, buoyed by an undefeated 57 off 21 balls (6 fours, 4 sixes) from Tom Kohler-Cadmore and 33* off 19 balls (5 fours) from Tom Abell, coasted to an easy win by eight wickets riding on the unbroken partnership of 75 off 34 balls between the two.
The second game between Nuwara Eliya Kings and Colombo Jaguars ended in a no-result with rain spoiling the contest, reducing it to just six overs during which time Nuwara Eliya Kings raced to 79-1 with Avishka Fernando scoring 50 of them off 18 balls (3 fours, 5 sixes).
Dinesh Chandimal and Binura Fernando were the other national cricketers to excel yesterday for Kandy Bolts and Galle Marvels, respectively. Chandimal top scored with a stroke-filled 66 off 25 balls that included 5 sixes – three of which was hit off leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay off consecutive balls before eventually succumbing to him. Despite Chandimal’s extraordinary hitting, Kandy Bolts could manage only 100-5 with Binura Fernando taking three wickets. Galle Marvels knocked the runs off easily to win by 7 wickets. Andre Fletcher led the way with 41* off 21 balls (3 fours, 4 sixes).
Fernando, coming straight from the Abu Dhabi T10, took the Player of the Match award.
