The second day of the 47th Ritzbury Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletic Championship concluded in Anuradhapura yesterday.
The overall championship comprised both the junior and senior championships during different periods, drawing a total participation of over 17,000 athletes. This is the highest ever participation in the history of the competition, which is the oldest and most prestigious schools athletics championship in Sri Lanka.
The second day of the 2018 Ritzbury Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championship saw fierce competition in the finals of the 200 meters, high jump, long jump, discus throw and 80 meters hurdles while several new records were set.
T.O.V. Ariyawansa from St. Aloysius’ College in Ratnapura set a record in the 80 meters hurdles (Under-15 Boys), D.L Sewmini Nathali from Ave Maria Convent, Negombo set a record in the Under-15 Girls’ shot put and L.M. Shihara Sandamini Silva from Good Shepherd Convent in Panadura set a record in Under-12 Girls’ long jump.
In addition to new meet records being set on day two, S. Dahamsa Kahangama from Sumana Balika Vidyalaya in Ratnapura also equalled the current record in the Under-15 Girls 80 meters hurdles.
Ritzbury chocolates from Ceylon Biscuits Ltd. (CBL) is the sole sponsor of this annual event for eight consecutive years.
Tomorrow is the final day of the Ritzbury Sir John Tarbet Junior Athletics Championship 2018 where the award presentation will also take place.
