Nissanka Senadhipath elected as Sri Lanka Baseball President

Nissanka Senadhipathi was elected as the new President, while Asanga Senevirathne was elected as the new Executive Vice-President of the Sri Lanka Amateur Baseball/Softball Association at the Annual General Meeting (AGM), which concluded online yesterday (31 October).

The AGM of the Sri Lanka Baseball Association was conducted virtually, signifying the first virtual AGM of a sports body in Sri Lanka. 

Major Senadhipathi, a man who defines courage, discipline and determination will bring in a wealth of experience in sports administration and promotion. He was the President of the Basketball Association and took basketball to new heights. During his period, basketball became one of the top sports in the country, and he conducted many tournaments in Sri Lanka with the inclusion of foreign players who are playing in the Major League in Europe and USA. With his leadership, we can expect baseball to also become one of the top sports in the country. 

Newly elected committee for 2021 comprises seven new faces, including Asanga Seneviratne – who was the former President of Sri Lanka Rugby. Asanga took rugby to new heights. Sri Lanka became the No. 2 sevens rugby team in Asia during his presidency. Asanga is also the current Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee and played rugby for Sri Lanka and was a reputed cricketer.  

Whilst the position of Secretary will be held by Flight Lieutenant Sanka Abeywickrama, former Secretary Rajith Ratnayake will take on the responsibility of Vice-President, and former Vice-President Air Commodore Sujeevan Senarathne will continue in the same position. Manoj Fernando, who has actively engaged in promoting baseball in Sri Lanka over the last 35 years, will also take on his new position as an Executive Vice-President.

Sri Lanka Baseball conducted its first International baseball tournament in Sri Lanka in 2019, which they won, beating the higher-ranked Pakistan. The Sri Lanka baseball team also took part in the Asian Games and the Asian Baseball Championships. 

The Baseball Association is taking the game island-wide, and in the recent weeks, they conducted coaching clinics in Kandy, Laggala and Matale. They also conduct a residential coaching camp for 80 coaches with reputed coach and educator Andrea D’Auria, with the support of the Solidarity Fund and NOC.
