No changes at the top as Dellon, Denuwan and Harshitha sit pretty

Another week of the Dialog 4G-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy/Schoolgirl Cricketer of the Year 2018 competition came to an end without any change to the top order of the three categories as Dellon Peiris, Denuwan Perera and Harshitha Samarawickrama continue to take centre stage.

Without the inclusion of online votes this week, mainly due to some logistic issues, we will be publishing the results for the 19th week counted only with coupons. However, those online votes which failed to appear this week will be counted into the coming week, when the results of the 20th week come out.

However, no evident change has occurred in the concluded week, leaving the frontrunners in their respective positions.

This makes S. Thomas› College leg-spinner Dellon Peiris the leader of the All-Island Schools category as he takes his total to an overwhelming 22,706. Incidentally, Dellon happens to be the only contender in the category to receive 547 votes while the second best on the list is 40 from bottom seed Ravindu Fernando of Maris Stella College, Negombo.

Sachin Silva of St. Peter›s College remains in second position but he has managed only to add nine to his tally, which now reads 13,686. The difference between the two soars up to 9,020. Others on the list, namely Vihan Gunasekara of D.S. Senanayake College, Ananda College skipper Asel Sigera and Kavin Peiris of Lumbini College follow down the order.

In the Emerging Schools category, leader Denuwan of Carey College added 404 votes to take his total to 11,775 to lead second-placed Kenula Gunaratne of St. Aloysius College Ratnapura by 3,321 votes, which is further lower than last week. Kenula›s total reached 8,454 with the addition of 877 votes, which eventually is the best addition for the week by any contender.

Sonara Karunathunga and Thimira Malshan, both of Ananda Sasthralaya, and Heshan Madushanka of Piliyandala Central follow in down the order for yet another week unchanged.

Harshitha Samarawickrama of Anula Vidyalaya continues to lead the Girls› Schools category yet she anticipates a stiff challenge from Pabasara Ranabahu of Rathnavali Girls› School Gampaha. The gap between the two continues to narrow down and by this week it reads 973.

Harshitha added 514 votes and her total moved to 7,266 while Pabasara›s tally reached 6,293 with the addition of 754, the second best addition for the week. Kaveesha Dilhani of Devapathiraja MV, Rathgama and Ruwini Nandasena of St. Joseph›s Girls School are the other two contenders on the list. With the online votes coming back for a count next week with those uncounted this week, there could be major changes in standings.

Coupons and online votes

Coupons will be published in the two English dailies the Daily Mirror and the Daily FT, and the two Sinhala dailies Daily Lankadeepa and Ada, and Sinhala weekend newspaper Deshaya, with the deadline set to arrive after 11 more weekends. Readers can vote for their favourite schoolboy or schoolgirl cricketer and take them to the winning post during this period.

Dialog Axiata’s online system to vote for the Most Popular Cricketer (www.dialog.lk/cricket) will allow voting until 5 April 2018.

Both coupon votes and online votes will be counted on a weekly basis and the official results will be published in the five newspapers and their websites.

The deadline for coupons and online votes will be every Thursday afternoon. Online votes received after the weekly cut-off period will be counted for the next week, while for coupons only those numbered for the particular week will be taken into account.
