Ocean Lanka crowned Champions of Munchee National Volleyball Championship Novices Tournament

Ocean Lanka Men’s volleyball team, OCL Sharks, overpowered Kurunegala Golden Tigers SC in an enthralling final to win the Novices tournament Champions title at the 12th edition of the Munchee National Volleyball Championship 2019. The result handed Ocean Lanka their maiden title of the prestigious annual tournament. 

OCL Sharks lost the opening set before storming back to a 3-1 triumph (29-31, 25-22, 25-22, 27-25) at the Maharagama National Youth Services Council Indoor Stadium. Vice-Captain Gayan Mallikarathna was adjudged the Best Player, while fellow team mate Chathuranga Rajapaksha won the Best Setter award. 

“As a club representing the private sector, we take great pride in being able to play at National level. We are extremely grateful for our coaches, supporting staff and most of all, the backing received from the Ocean Lanka Management and staff,” said Ocean Lanka Team Manager Ruwansiri Mallikarachchi after the final match.

The triumph follows Ocean Lanka’s recent victory in the Mercantile Volleyball Super League Championship in November 2019. The winning team included Buddhika Bandara (Captain), Gayan Mallikarathna (Vice-Captain), Ajith Kumara, Ashen Peiris, Chathuranga Rajapaksha, Mohammed Meesan, Pasindu Sandaruwan, Ravindu Chathuranga, Solomon Madushan, Supun Chandana, Kasun Dilan, Rangana Sampath, Amila Malinda and Tharuka Subodha.
