The Golden Jubilee Saints Quadrangular Tournament, hosted by St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota, was worked off in Kandy over the last two days and saw the Old Peterites winning all the events (cricket, rugby and basketball).
At rugby the Old Peterites stamped their class when they won the Sevens rugby competition, beating the hosts 40-7 in Nittawela. Out of the three sports the Bambalapitiya lads dominated with three wins with St. Joseph’s College winning one of them from the four held so far.
Cricket was worked off in Asgiriya (Over 40) where the Antonians fell short by 12 runs against a well-drilled Peterite team in the finals. The Peterites were well supported by a brilliant century from Asanga Perera of the Colombo school. Former Antonian opening batsman and district coach Suresh Peiris scored a brilliant unbeaten 80 which was nevertheless insufficient to pull off a dramatic win for the Katugastota lads.
In the Below 40 age group event in Katugastota once again, the lads from Bambalapitiya showed their class by beating their traditional rivals the Old Joes by 32 runs.
The basketball event was worked off at the Gateway school courts in Kandy where the Old Peterites showed their quick moves to outclass the Old Joes 71-41.
The Josephians lead the series tally with 16 wins in the Main Quadrangular event while the Antonians lead the series tally in the Over 40’s with seven wins. The Benedictines have dominated basketball with 10 wins in 12 editions of the tournament while the Peterites have won the rugby tournament thrice in four outings.
