An excellent bowling performance by Tharindu Fernando saw Old Thomians Sports Club beat Mutwal Sports Club by six wickets to win the Colombo District Cricket Association (CDCA) Division III final played at the CCC grounds yesterday.
Fernando, a former Thomian left-arm pacer, ran through the Mutwal SC batting to end with figures of seven for 49.
Invited to bat first, Mutwal SC slumped to 73-8 in the 17th over against Fernando’s hostile pace and only some resistance from the late order saw them reach 135. Milinda Weerasinghe contributed 43 off 44 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes) and Aruna Weerasinghe 39 off 35 balls (3 sixes, 3 fours).
Old Thomians SC in reply lost their first three wickets for 49, but two useful partnerships of 50 and 37*involving wicket-keeper Ashen Fernando (36* off 47 balls, 3 fours) with Manthila Wijeratne (38 off 50 balls, 6 fours) and Helakamal Nanayakkara (22* off 31 balls, 2 fours) saw them home with plenty to spare.
Scores:
• Mutwal SC 135 (25.1) (Sanoj Perera 22, Milinda Weerasinghe 43, Aruna Weerasinghe 39, Tharindu Fernando 7/49)
• Old Thomian SC 136-4 (27.5) (Manthila Wijeratne 38, Ashen Fernando 36*, Helakamal Nanayakkara 22*, Ferien Silva 2/36)
