A group of Opposition MPs have written to Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena this week calling for a parliamentary select committee to be formed to resolve matters related to the sport of cricket in Sri Lanka.
The communique signed by Opposition MPs including Dayasiri Jayasekara, Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammanpila, Prof. Charitha Herath, Wasantha Yapa Bandara, M. Muzammil, Dr. Nalaka Godahewa and several others highlighted that the current state of Sri Lanka cricket has become a widely discussed issue in society.
The MPs are urging the formation of a select committee to investigate various issues, including the poor performance of the Sri Lanka national team in the recent World Cup tournament, corruption allegations against Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the temporary suspension of SLC by the International Cricket Council and the potential remedies that parliament can provide in these matters.
The group also suggested that the committee should examine and recommend measures that can be taken to develop cricket at both the national and school levels.
