The Badminton World Federation (BWF) recently confirmed experienced badminton match referee Padula Sri Rohana De Silva as a BWF referee.
De Silva, who represents Sri Lanka, was one of only four candidates who passed the theory exam in Malaysia last year and as a referee for the Osaka International Challenge 2023, he passed his practical assessment in Osaka, Japan this year.
In Sri Lankan badminton history, he is only the second Sri Lankan to be confirmed as a BWF referee. He also creates history by becoming the first Sri Lankan to achieve the highest level of umpiring. He has been a BWF-Certificated umpire since 2012.
Rohana de Silva began his career in badminton in 1995 as a local technical official and advanced to international status in 2002. He has served as an international technical official for 21 years with many more to go.
De Silva has always been a valuable asset to Sri Lanka Badminton. He is now assisting a lot of aspiring young Umpires and Referees in rising through the ranks and achieving recognition on an international level.
All Sri Lankans should be extremely proud of De Silva for reaching such heights in badminton. Many more young athletes will be inspired to follow in his footsteps as a result of this.
