Abu Dhabi (Dunya News): Pitch curator of Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium Abu Dhabi Mohan Singh, curator of yesterday’s match between Afghanistan and New Zealand, reportedly died by suicide on Sunday.

According to sources, this tragic incident happened while the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was ongoing. Curator Mohan Singh, who was responsible for the pitch in yesterday’s match, was found dead in his room.

Singh, 36, was an Indian resident.

The permutations ahead of the match meant that if New Zealand won over Afghanistan, then the Indian team would have been out of the semi-final race. If Afghanistan won over New Zealand, India’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals would have been revived.

Singh came to Abu Dhabi in September 2004 after training to be a curator in India at the Punjab Cricket Stadium in Mohali, where he had been employed since 1994, first as a ground supervisor as well assisting the coaches in a number of sports including tennis and swimming before his focus moved on to cricket.

He had three offers and took up the job at Abu Dhabi instead of positions in Uganda and within India.

The ICC meanwhile has sent its condolences to the Singh’s family. At the request of Abu Dhabi Cricket, the ground staff and Mohan’s family, the game between New Zealand and Afghanistan went ahead.

An ICC spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends, Abu Dhabi Cricket and everyone connected with the event.”
