Police SC yesterday wrapped up their league campaign with a crucial 24/17 victory over Army SC at Police Park. At the short breather the Cops led 14/3.
The win, achieved with a bonus point, ensured Police finished in 6th place, while Army had to settle for 7th. It was a fiercely contested encounter, but Police’s clinical finishing and disciplined defence gave them the edge. CH who ended on top in the plate segment ending on number 5 overall accounted for the Plate Trophy.
The match started with Police SC asserting early dominance, using their structured attack to put pressure on the Army defence. Hafiz Thabeeth, Shane Hopwood, Sujan Kodithuwakku, and Lahiru Thilakaratne all crossed the try line, showing their attacking power. Yohan Peiris converted two of these tries, giving Police a 14-point first-half total. Army, in contrast, struggled to break through and had to settle for a penalty from Isuru Madagedara, trailing 14/3 at halftime.
Army SC returned in the second half with renewed energy, determined to turn the game around. Their efforts were rewarded with tries from experienced Sudaraka Dikkubura and Mohamed Akram, with Madagedara and Gayan Salinda adding conversions. However, Police remained composed, maintaining their lead and controlling the game’s pace. Their defence held firm, preventing Army from making further inroads.
Army SC, despite their spirited second-half comeback, fell short in capitalising on crucial moments. Their defensive lapses in the first half proved costly, and while they showed resilience, they could not overturn the deficit. With some questionable decisions one of the first half tries which was to be scored by their skipper, Ashan Bandara was kicked by a Police player. A penalty try was not awarded for the Solders for this offence.
The referee was Raveen Alexander.
Police SC will lock horns with CR while Army will play Havies in their Clifford Cup Quarter final encounters.
