By Shamseer Jaleel
Police Sports Club secured their very first win this season when they edged out Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club by 23/20 at Welisara last evening.
At the short breather, winners led 10/7.
Both teams missed a number of scoring opportunities in the initial half.
Navy scored first through Senura Peiris, which was converted by Isuru Congahawatta. Police cut the deficit through Udaya Sanjula’s try. The former Thomian fly-half Yehan Bulathsinghala, missed the conversion. Minutes later he touched down his first try but once again the conversion was not accurate.
After the turnaround, the game changed physically, with the referee also losing his cool at times. Cops scored their first second half try, when Amjad Faumy brushed aside few defenders to score a superb try. Bulathsingalage added the extras to take the lead to 17/7. Shortly afterwards, Isuru Congahawatte put over penalty for the hosts, but Bulathsingalage replied with one to take the scores and keep the lead to 10 points in Police favour. Navy, who never gave up fought back through a sweeping three quarter move which ended in a try for Dinesh Lakmal. Bulathsingalage put over another penalty for Cops, but Navy had just time for one consolation try in the last minute of the game through Sajith Seram.
In the end the difference of score between the two sides was a penalty kick. Cops registered their first win while Navy are without a single win in their five games played so far.
Referee Ishanka Abeykoon handled the game.
Today there will be two games down for decision in Colombo. Havies will host Sri Lions at Havelock Park while CH will host Army SC at Race Course ground.
