Police Sports Club pulled off a magnificent 41/22 win over Navy Sports Club in their opening encounter in the Nippon Paint Major Rugby League 2023/2024 encounter played at the Police Park on Saturday.

At the short breather, Police led 24/8.

Police scored their tries through Sujan Kodituwakku, Hirantha Perera (2), Lahiru Thilakarathne and Matheesha Perera (2). Prince Chamara did the kicking duties for the Cops.

Navy scored their tries through Denuwan Wickramarachchi, Anushka Ramesh and Lahiru Herath. Thilina Weerasinghe did the kicking duties for the Sailors. Sailors played better rugby in the later half after a poor first-half defence, which was all over.

Police SC Head Coach Nilfer Ibrahim played an exemplary role when he opted to keep out experienced Mithun Hapugoda who joined the squad very late from the UAE. But the former Mahanama and National player is expected to field the Police outfit in their remaining games and play a vital role, especially in the latter half of the game.

Referee was Ishanka Abeykoon.
