Police Sports Club edged out Army Sports Club and secured the Plate segment with one more game to play when they beat the Army by 42 points (6 tries, 3 conversions, 2 penalties) to 37 points (5 tries, 3 conversions, 2 penalties) in their Inter Club Rugby league encounter which was worked off at Panagoda last evening.
At the short breather it was the Army that led 29/20.
The game was hotly contested, with a tale of two halves, with the Army SC holding the edge and playing cohesive rugby in that half, but once the second half was in play, the Cops made a bold comeback in the last 10 minutes of the game when they were down 23/37. But it was the former Isipathana player Hirantha Perera who played his heart out by scoring two tries, and one more try in the last minute by Sujan Kodituwakku who scored a hat trick of tries sealed the game for the Cops.
Police Sports Club tries were scored by Sujan Kodituwakku (3), Hirantha Perera (2) and Akash Madushanka. Shane Hopwood put over the two penalties and two try conversions, while Naveen Kanishka also put over one try conversion.
Meanwhile, for Army SC their tries were scored by Sudaraka Dikkumbura (2), Ashan Bandara (2) and Kaveen Perera, with Ashan Bandara putting over two penalties and three try conversions for the home team.
With a game to go, Police SC accumulated 30 points, followed by Army SC at 17 points.
Referee was Gihan Yatawara.
Today there will be two matches down for decision. Havelock SC will host Kandy SC at Havelock Park in one of the Cup segment encounters, while Navy SC will host Air Force SC at Welisara in a Plate encounter.
