President felicitates Lankan athletes who shone at Commonwealth Games

President Maithripala Sirisena expressed his appreciation and presented awards and gifts to the Sri Lankan men and women who performed well at the recent Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast, at an event held at the Presidential Secretariat on 25 April. 

President Sirisena said he was thankful to everyone who brought glory to Sri Lanka by winning the highest number of awards Sri Lanka has ever claimed at the Commonwealth Games.  

The President offered his best wishes for their future sporting endeavours and announced that he would ensure that they received the utmost support in these pursuits.

President Sirisena stated that sports helped to create people with discipline and said that he would fulfill his responsibilities towards the promotion of sports in the journey to build a better society.

Indika Dissanayake, who won a silver medal in the men’s weightlifting event, J.A.C Lakmal, who won the bronze medal, B.D. Hansani Gomas, Anusha Kodithuwakku, who for the first time won gold for Sri Lanka in boxing and Thiwanka Ranasighe and Ishan Seneviratne Bandara who won bronze medals were felicitated.

The President also conveyed his appreciation of the contribution of each of the athlete’s coaches.

Minister Faiszer Musthapha, Deputy Minister H.M.M. Harees, former minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, Sports Ministry Secretary Jayantha Wijeratne, Department of Sports Director General H.M.B.P. Herath and sportsmen and women and sports council members were present at the event.
