President’s Gold Cup Volleyball Championship draws to a close

The President’s Gold Cup Volleyball Championship 2017 was concluded on 18 December with President Maithripala Sirisena attending the closing ceremony at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

This tournament was conducted under four categories: Open Male, Open Female, Under 22 Male and Under 22 Female.

The Katana United Sports Club won the men’s title while the Koswadiya Wijaya Sports Club won the women’s division. The President presented gold awards and Rs. 150,000 worth of prize money to the winning clubs. 

The United Sports Club won the Men’s Under 22 Championship while the Women’s Under 22 Championship was clinched by the Galigamuwa SiriParakumba Sports Club. The President also presented awards, cheques and certificates to the winners. 

President Sirisena presented special awards to the institutions in recognition of their service of providing sponsorships for the game of Volleyball for more than 10 years.

The President’s Gold Cup is hosted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation and it is conducted island-wide in four stages during a period of four months. 

Around 40,000 athletes from 2,500 teams representing over 300 Grama Seva Divisions of the country participated in this tournament. This is the largest event among Sri Lankan volleyball tournaments.  

The President of the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation, Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya, Vice President State Minister Sudarshani Fernandopulle, Ashoka Priyantha MP, Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation General Secretary A.S. Nalaka and others participated in this event.
