  • Cabinet approval mandatory in appointing Interim Committees
  • President says securing cricket not a challenge to Govt. which salvaged economy hit by worst crisis

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has instructed the Chairman of the Ministerial Sub-Committee for Cricket to spearhead efforts aimed at lifting the ban imposed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sri Lanka Cricket.

Further, it has been decided that, moving forward, the approval of the cabinet will be mandatory for the appointment of any interim committees. This follows Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Roshan Ranasinghe citing the Sports Law went ahead and appointed an interim committee headed by former Sri Lanka World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga. Subsequently the interim committee faced a 14-day enjoining order following litigation by Sri Lanka Cricket.

Minister Ranasinghe in response disputed the President’s stance.

Separately President Wickremesinghe during an interaction with print and electronic media editors yesterday said securing cricket wasn't a major challenge to a Government which salvaged the economy from its worst ever crisis.
