Prestigious Shakspeare Shield tees off on Sunday at RCGC

​​​The prestigious Shakspeare Shield, Sri Lanka’s longest running golf tourney, will tee off at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) on 8 July in Colombo. 

This will be the 107th edition of this annual championship, which was initiated in 1911 and will be worked off in a stableford format. The tourney is open to all RCGC members and registered companies, including the diplomatic community, government departments and service organisations.

The Shakspeare Shield, the RCGC’s oldest corporate challenge, will once again be sponsored by Carson Cumberbatch Plc. The tourney is named in honour of Walter Shakespeare, a former Chairman of Carson Cumberbatch, who initiated the club’s first foursome competition for member institutions. Carson Cumberbatch has been associated with the prestigious tourney since its inception to promote the growth of the game in the country, plus foster further goodwill amongst corporates. 

In its 2017 edition, Madura Amarasingha and Chanaka Perera from Revognah Leisure took home the Shakspeare Shield, whilst Harsha Abeywckrema and Suhayb Sangani from Brandix emerged runners-up. Over 25 teams have signed up to tee off for the prestigious title this year. 

The Shakspeare Shield is synonymous with Carson Cumberbatch, and immensely proud to continue our association with the tourney into its second century, upholding the values of our former Chairman to enhance greater relations between institutions through sport.  

Together with the RCGC, we are privileged to present this historical challenge to golfers in the island, which will in turn empower the growth of the game whilst upholding its rich traditions and learnings.

The Shakspeare Shield is the oldest corporate competition registered on the Board of RCGC, bringing together two of Sri Lanka’s prestigious institutions – Carson Cumberbatch Plc and the RCGC, who both celebrate a rich history of over 100 years.
