The game of golf has improved and the popularity for the game increased considerably in the country in the recent past with many taking the game at a very young age.
This was evident the way the juniors performed at the Prima Junior Golf Championship 2022 which concluded at the Royal Colombo Golf Course (RCGC) recently. Young golfer and consistent performer, K. Danushan was in class form in tandem winning the Gold event by achieving three days of fantastic golf in front of an appreciative crowd at RCGC.
Danushan, playing on the last day with an eight shot lead, managed to hold his nerves together to beat Tejwani. He pushed the seasoned campaigner and national representative at the recently concluded Scotland event, Niresh Tejwani to number two position.
In the Silver segment it was 14- year- old Reshan Algama in tandem for the third year winning the event. He started his win in this segment at a very young age of 12 years, 3 three years back. A student from CIS, Colombo was in sparkling form to take away the award with powerful long-range shots. He had a six under round which is a rare occasion by a junior in the recent past. He had 12 pars in the final round. Further Reshan had 12 pars and 6 birdies with successive birdies in 13, 14 and 15th holes. Reshan was in fine form with long hitting, which brought him the best win by a huge margin.
Thejas Rathis Kanth ended as runner up in the silver event playing for the very first time in the segment. The 12-year-old school boy from British School of Colombo continued his good form from the Club Championship where he showed a lot of promise playing alongside some seniors and veterans in the golfing circle. He is expected to dominate the Silver segment for the next two years.
In the Girls Gold/Silver event once again, Kaya Daluwatte showed why she is number one with some powerful and accurate golf. She had three good rounds of golf to secure the win while Sherin Balasooriya was the runner up.
In the Bronze section it was Kaitlyn Norton who won while Thomian schoolboy, Saqeeb Zuhar after an ordinary day one bounced back strongly to have two days of top-class golf to end as runner up.
The Copper division was won by Revan Amarasinghe while Thejas Rathis Kanth’s younger brother, Yuvan Rathis Kanth was the runner up.
