Two teams that have performed outstandingly well in the Major Club Under-23 tournament Ragama CC and Moors SC will meet in the two-day final beginning at the R. Premadasa Stadium today.
Both teams reached the final defeating strong opponents in the first innings – Ragama CC winning over Tamil Union and Moors SC against SSC.
The final promises to be a closely-contested affair with the two finalists having players who have performed outstandingly well in the tournament.
Two left-arm spinners Theesan Vithushan (avg. 11.65) of Moors SC and Ragama CC skipper Dellon Peiris (avg. 14.17) are jointly the leading wicket-takers with 29 wickets apiece.
Moors SC also have another match winner in their ranks in off-spinner Imithiyaz Slaza who took six wickets to destroy the strong SSC batting in the semi-finals. He has 23 wickets (avg. 20.21) in the tournament and is an excellent all-rounder as well scoring the only century for Moors SC so far. Ragama CC also has an effective off-spinner in Kalhara Senaratne who’s picked up 19 wickets (avg. 20.89).
Left-handers Ranmith Jayasena and Yohan Liyanage are Ragama CC’s main run scorers with 338 runs (avg. 56.33) with one century and 331 runs (51.17) also with a century respectively. Opening bat Dinuka Dilshan leads Moors SC.
The champions will receive Rs. 500,000 and runner-up Rs. 300,000. Individual awards include Rs. 100,000 for the Player of the Tournament, Rs. 75,000 each for the Best Batsman and for the Best Bowler and Rs. 50,000 for the Player of the Final. – (ST)
