  • Super Eight qualification chances hang by thread

Whatever faint hopes Sri Lanka had of qualifying for the Super Eights of the T20 World Cup was washed away by heavy rain that flooded the Central Broward Regional Park in Florida forcing the abandonment of their Group D match against Nepal.

The result meant that both teams shared two points, which does not do any good for Sri Lanka or Nepal who were without a win prior to yesterday’s game.

For Sri Lanka who lost their first two matches to South Africa and Bangladesh it was a must-win game to keep their chances alive. But the no-result all but ends their hopes of progressing to the second round of the World Cup, and also increases the difficulty for Nepal in the group. Both sides are still searching for their first tournament victories.

This washout will hurt Sri Lanka the most as their Super Eight qualification chances hang by a thread. Sri Lanka will need to win their final game against the Netherlands on 16 June. But, their destiny is not in their hands as they would require Bangladesh to lose to both Nepal and Netherlands.

With South Africa already qualified from Group D, Bangladesh look like the second team from the group to join them in the Super Eights. Bangladesh requires to beat either the Netherlands or Nepal to clinch a place in the last eight.
