Ranil wins President’s and Avinesh accounts for Captain’s Cup

Two evergreen golfers, Avinesh Kumar and Ranil Peiris stamped their positions once more in Nuwara Eliya when they walked away with the Captain’s Cup and President’s Prize respectively. Meanwhile 16-year old school boy golf sensation, Haroon Aslam accounted for the A R Aitken Cup at the Nuwara-Eliya Golf Course last weekend. Reza Wadood was the Runner-Up in this event.

Former Trinitian and technically correct golfer, Surain Premathilake and former test cricketer, Mahela Jayawardena accounted for the Runner-Up positions in the Captain’s Cup and President’s Prize respectively.

A record number of 101 golfers teed off on the second day in the Captain’s Cup while on the last day 68 of them played for honours in the President’s Prize. Some mouth-watering golf was displayed by the veteran golfers who play in this circuit around the calendar plus a few new entries caught the eyes of many who were present in the beautiful golf course in the country. The event was very well organised and conducted in a timely manner in the hills under very good condition for the game of golf.

On the last day in the President’s Prize event Ranil Peiris was in sparkling form netting 74 with 7 handicap while former Test cricketer turned golfer Mahela Jayawardena too gave a good run with his accurate stroke play ending as the runner-up with a net score of 75 with 8 handicap. Aslam Mohideen, father of Haroon Aslam ended in fourth position in both the Captain’s Cup and President’s Prize. Another top class golfer, Tharanga Gunasekera too was in good form to end at number 10 in the Captain’s event and 8th overall in the President’s Prize.

 On the second day Avinesh Kumar accounted for the Captain’s Cup while Surain Premathilake was beaten by a whisker to end as a Runner-Up in the same event.

Captain’s Cup closest to the Pin was Avinesh Kumar and longest drive was Haroon Aslam. In President’s Prize closest to Pin was Capt. Navin de Silva with longest drive being Kushal John Pillai.

The Organising Committee headed by President Maj. Srinath Rajapakse conducted these tournaments under strict health and safety guidelines.
