Two top junior golfers from Sri Lanka, Reshan Algama and Adhithya Weerasinghe are set to represent the nation at the Indian Golf Union-organised All-India Junior Boys Golf Championship 2024 which will take place in Bangalore, India, from 2 to 6 December.
This prestigious tournament, known for the region’s brightest golfing talents, has been a launch pad for many successful professional careers across Asia. Its rich history and competitive spirit make it one of the most important junior golfing events in the region, providing young players with invaluable international exposure.
Reshan Algama, a left-handed golfer from Colombo International School (CIS), has already proven himself as one of Sri Lanka’s most talented young players. He has represented the national outfit on multiple occasions, including as a national player in Bangladesh and India. Most recently, he participated in the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship in Japan, showing his international experience. He has also represented Sri Lanka in junior tournaments held in the Philippines, Malaysia, USA and Thailand for the Sri Lanka Junior Team.
Adhithya Weerasinghe (16) a rising star from Anuradhapura Central who is currently studying at Ananda College. Adhithya’s selection to the Sri Lanka team for the All-India Junior Amateur is a proud milestone in his young career and a testament to his rapid development. Notably, this marks a historic moment for Ananda College, as Adhithya becomes the first-ever student from his alma mater to represent Sri Lanka in golf as a junior player.
Adithya’s best achievement was a gross score of 68 at Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC). Special features were the wins in the Silver division at the Prima Golf and Srixton Junior Open in 2023. He is also a golfer with the top five in Sri Lanka Amateur Ranking. He represented the national junior team at the Salangor International Junior Golf Championship in Malaysia last year. He was also an overall winner at the Victoria Golf Resort (VGR) June 2024 event.
His journey from a regional standout to an international representative is also a reflection of the success of the HSBC Future Lions program, conducted in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Golf Union Junior Sub-Committee. This is designed to nurture junior golfing talent across Sri Lanka, and has played a pivotal role in grooming players like Adhithya for the international stage. The rise of young stars such as Adhithya highlights the program’s impact and promises a bright future for Sri Lankan golf.
