Reshan Algama tops world amateur ranking in Sri Lanka

Reshan Algama, the sensational 15-year-old golfer recently clinched the top spot among Sri Lankans on World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) leaderboard for 2023. 

With a global ranking of 605, Algama, who previously held the No. 1 position in Sri Lanka at 584, has once again made history in Sri Lankan golf as one of the youngest to do so. Two other youngsters, Yannik Kumara and Kumar Danushan are in pursuit, had the highest move upwards in 2023, veteran golfer. Chanaka Perera and Uchitha Ranasinghe are among the top 1,000 amateurs in the leaderboard.

This achievement shows Reshan’s dedication and consistent performance, positioning him as a trailblazer in Sri Lankan golf history. At the tender age of 15, Algama, who entered the golf course at a very young age became the youngest player in Sri Lanka to top the WAGR leaderboard in November last year.

Algama's impressive form in 2023 counts six victories last year and one early this year, with his latest triumph at the Srixon/RCGC Champions 2024 tournament. His success in meeting stringent eligibility criteria and clinching the National Ranking Champions title three times within nine months is unprecedented in Sri Lankan golfing history.

The young golfer accumulated valuable points during international campaigns in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia and India, as well as in domestic tournaments, showing his prowess on the global stage and achieving a peak rating of 584 in the world, last month.
