Reshan Bandaranyake leads Trinity at Rugby

Reshan Bandaranyake will lead Trinity College Under 19 rugby team in the year 2019. He will have Dhiren Ratwatte as his deputy for the season. Both these youngsters come from a sporty background family with their generations representing Trinity College Kandy.

The Bandaranayake family sporting tradition continues for more than 100 years as the great, great grandfather of Reshan, Jinadasa Hulugalle Bandaranayake went on to represent both in rugby and cricket during his school days at Trinity. He captained the Kandy school’s cricket team in 1919 and received his Cricket “Lion”. He represented Trinity in Rugby Football from 1918 to 1919.

Reshan’s grand-father Ananda Hulugalle Bandaranayake represented his lam mater in rugby and cricket. In 1953 he won his Cricket “Lion”. For Rugby he won colours.

His father played as a Centre in the cracking rugby year at Trinity in 1987 where he (Rajiv) played under Tyrell Rajapakse where the side ended as the League and Premadasa knock out champions. In the whole season only once their line was crossed. Reshan’s brother Reshan played for Trinity as a three quarter.

Dhiren too comes from a sport background where his father, Chanuka Ratwatte represented Trinity in 1991-1992 winning his colors and his uncle, Lohan Ratwatte, Rugby “Lion” played in the 1987 outstanding side. His grandfather, Late Anurudha Ratwatte played for Trinity rugby outfit in 1957/58.

Trinity will play their Old Boys encounter on 2 February at Pallekelle and Vidyartha on 8 February before the season commencement game against Zahira in Colombo.
