In a stunning achievement, two Sri Lankan golfers, 15 year old Colombo International School’s, Reshan Algama and Certis Lanka’s Chanaka Perera, have earned the coveted opportunity to compete in the esteemed 122nd Amateur Championship of India.
This prestigious event is scheduled to unfold at the historic Royal Calcutta Golf Club (RCGC) from 12 to 17 December. On 11 December, it will be a practise session.
With more than 120 players hailing from countries as diverse as South Africa to Australia, this championship promises to be a hotbed of golfing prowess. The tournament is set to feature a qualifying match play, gradually narrowing down the field to the top 32 players who will then engage in stroke play individual matches, with the grand finale on 17 December.
Reshan Algama becomes as the one of the youngest Sri Lankans to represent the nation but has also secured an impressive 2nd place in the national leader board. Currently, holding 773rd position in the world rankings, a testament to his growing international acclaim.
On the flip side of the age spectrum, Chanaka Perera, a 29-year-old veteran amateur, is showcasing his skills with the goal of transitioning into a professional player by the year’s end. Perera’s journey exemplifies the enduring spirit of golf, emphasising the sport’s potential for growth and transformation.
The organisation’s commitment to Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) nurturing talent and facilitating participation in international tournaments is paramount in elevating the country’s standing in the global golfing arena.
The 122nd Amateur Championship of India serves as a grand platform for these talents to shine on the international stage, allowing Sri Lanka to reaffirm its presence and prowess in the global golfing landscape.
