Fifteen-year-old Reshan Algama, the rising star of Sri Lankan golf took the lead at the end of day two when he shot a historic 5-under 66 at the Srixon RCGC Junior Open Golf Championship 2023 continued at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC).
Algama’s total score of 137 after the second round placed him in a league of his own, a remarkable five shots clear of his closest competitor Kumar Dansushan who posted a commendable even-par 71 for a total of 142.
Algama’s extraordinary performance surpassed seasoned amateur golf players who have represented Sri Lanka in the past putting his status as the top junior in World Amateur rankings.
Meanwhile, Kvhan Tejwani showcased his superior class by improving upon his previous day’s performance, securing a joint third place with another talented junior golfer Jevahn Sathasivam (147).
In the 13 to 15+ years segment, Adithya Weerasinghe from Anuradhapura emerged the leader with a total score of 155. The talented and hard-working golfer surpassed Kaiyan Johnpillai and Keshav Algama, who both posted scores of 159 to tie in second place. Adithya showed his character and determination to secure the leaderboard in the silver segment. The youngster is supported by HSBC Future Lions program facilitated by Sri Lanka Junior golf.
The Bronze Division for 11 years and under, playing 14 holes, is currently led by Shenal Nimsith. Producing yet another solid round, Nimsith secured the top spot with a total score of 117. Lavidu Premarathne from Anuradhapura (126) and Udeera Bandara from the same region (134) are closely trailing, setting the stage for an intense final day in this division.
In the Copper Division for 10 years and under, playing 9 holes, Revaan Amarasinghe continued to showcase exceptional talent and versatility. With a commanding lead of 8 shots and a two-day score of 70, Amarasinghe is poised for victory. Jaidon Herath holds second position at 74, and Jaeden Sathasivam, the younger brother of Jevahn, posted a score of 80.
The third and final day’s event at the Srixon RCGC Junior Open Golf Championship 2023 will decide the winners in all segments. – (SJ)
