It’s that time of the year. The annual Ride for Ceylon charity bike ride is about to commence.

Cycling to raise funds for the redevelopment of the Green Memorial Hospital in Jaffna, approximately 60 cyclists from across the continents, descend on this teardrop island to participate in this challenging feat.

Pedalling through dusty and steep terrain, the cyclists will muscle through the arduous route from Kandy to Jaffna. Taking place from 28 February to 2 March, the cyclists raise funds through donations and sponsorships.

The highly acclaimed ride is also endorsed by the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau and is now in its 8th year. Furthermore, the ride has been sanctioned by the Sri Lanka Police Department, who provide practical advice and assistance.

Previous rides have raised funds to redevelop the nurses’ quarters, purchase an ambulance and a digital X-ray machine, and renovate other sections of the hospital. The cornerstone of this year’s ride will be the reconstruction of the Paediatric and Hope Beyond Cancer Units. R4C’s target sum is a staggering £ 100,000 or Rs. 40 million.

Although the focus has primarily been on the Green Memorial Hospital, the charity’s ambitions are far reaching. R4C seeks to see the advancement of the medical infrastructure nationwide.

During the COVID pandemic, R4C stepped in to distribute ration packs to daily wage earners throughout the country.

Additionally, R4C yearns for Sri Lanka to gain momentum as a top tourist destination, and a major cycling hub for avid riders.

By aligning themselves with the Sri Lankan Tourism Promotion Bureau, Sri Lankan Airlines and H.O.T. Travel, R4C are increasing the scope for this goal.

Though a small charity, R4C has never been limited by its size. Forever expanding and forward thinking, the charity’s bottom line is to see the betterment and prosperity of the nation.

Endorsed by leading banks in the global market, as well as the international giant, ekinops, and Asiri Hospitals, R4C is attracting major donors to back up its endeavours.R4C has recently teamed up with Sri Lankan Airlines, as well as the Canadian based charity Hope4Child.

“It’s profoundly encouraging to witness companies, organisations and individuals from different sectors uniting to build a lasting and benevolent future,” a spokesperson said.
