Rotary Club of Uva Hills, Rotaract Club of Jaffna Peninsula win 18th edition of TRR Rajan Trophy

The Rotary Sri Lanka celebrated the 18th edition of TRR Rajan Challenge Trophy on the 20 May 2023 at Nittawela Rugby Stadium, Kandy with the much sought after six a side cricket tournament played between the Rotarians and Rotaractors. The event was sponsored for the eighteen year by the trusted household brand ‘SOORYA’ that was founded by Late TRR Rajan that hails from Kundasale in the hill country capital Kandy.

“Late T.R.R. Rajan who was the 51st president of the Rotary Club of Kandy, was a respected humanitarian and a top business personality of Kandy. Better known as TRR, a versatile sportsman, sports benefactor, philanthropist and above all a gentleman of the highest caliber” said respected senior Rotarian and brother BDR Rajan.

“This tournament has been organised by the Rotary club of Kandy since 2002 and continues to be one of the most looked forward event in the Rotary calendar”said Rotary club of Kandy President Vaithieswaran.

The 2023 edition saw the TRR Rajan memorial trophy won by Rotary Club of Uva Hills/Rotaract Club of Jaffna Peninsula, runners up Rotary Club of Wariyapola/ Rotaract club of Nallur Heritage.

Commenting on the event the founder’s daughter - the First Female Governor of Rotary Sri Lanka Gowri Rajan said that her dad would have been the most delighted if alive as he was the first to enter the field of sponsorship with Kandy Sports Club rugby team in 1992 that went on to win the first trophy, the Clifford Cup. Later he sponsored the Old Trinitians Sports Club rugby team and also the sport hockey which his father P.T.Rajan who orchestrated once again in Kandy with a dedicated playground too’ she said.

Post COVID and the economic crisis the participation was strong with over 1000 Rotarians/ Rotaractors taking part at the event and ended up with camaraderie and enjoyment at the Rotary where family and friends joined the festival together. We shall continue to sponsor the Rotary - Six a side cricket tournament organised in memory of our founder Chairman late T.R.R. Rajan which attracts Rotarians across as per the values of Rotary” said Sun Match Company Chairman Suri Rajan.
