Royal College, led by dashing centre Shabith Feroze, look set to retain the league title once more after recording a convincing first round of five wins in the Singer League 2018.

Royal beat both St. Anthony’s College, Katugastota and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia by 50-plus points while they scored a convincing win over Kingswood College.

Their only close encounter came against St. Joseph’s College, with Royal winning 18-13. In their last encounter against Trinity College in the first leg of the 74th Bradby, they outclassed the Kandy school 39-7. Royal will play the second leg of this traditional clash on 5 May at the Pallekelle Rugby Stadium and will be ready for the first encounter of round two against Zahira College.

Royal’s closest rivals will be St. Peter’s College, who are also unbeaten in their group after having a close call against Isipathana and winning the rest of their four matches easily. They will be up against Trinity College in their second-round game at Pallekelle during the second weekend of May.

St. Joseph’s College and Isipathana, finished second in their respective groups, also have a chance but either Royal or Peter’s will have to drop a game in round two for them to come out on top.

Two teams each from the Cup segment groups will be demoted to the plate segment in round two. Dharmaraja, D.S. Senanayake College, St. Anthony’s and S. Thomas’ will be dropped down and will be playing among the other four top teams in the plate at present. The top two finishers from each group will be promoted to Singer League IA in 2019.

The second leg of the Bradby between Trinity and Royal on 5 May will be considered a friendly fixture. Dharmaraja will play Wesley College in their postponed encounter on the same day in Colombo.
